Security cameras atop Plensa’s sculpture!

The cameras were installed as part of a $52 million Department of Homeland Security grant to the Chicago region.

Why not put a security camera on the head of “Winged Victory,” or in the navel of “Venus de Milo” ?

Or have we lost? The cameras atop the Jaume Plensa-designed Crown Fountain were only two out of about 10 in Millennium Park alone, city officials said.

Here’s looking at you, kid.

Update! After the Tribune story, the city took the cameras down, from atop the work of art.

And the blogosphere rules,

“When we found out there were so many people who found it more obtrusive than we expected, we took them down,” said park spokeswoman Karen Ryan… The Chicago Tribune was the first to mention the aesthetic concerns to park managers, Ryan said. “Then we looked around for it (criticism) and we found it, found the blogs.”
