Dancing on Gehry

Click on one of the photos.

From the New York Times listing: NOÉMIE LAFRANCE The site-specific choreographer Noémie Lafrance might just have found her holy grail in the Frank Gehry-designed Richard B. Fisher Center for the Performing Arts at Bard College. Her “Rapture” will not take place in it, but on it, with dancers traveling across the voluptuous surface using a sophisticated rigging system. (Through Oct. 5.) At 7 p.m., Annandale-on-Hudson, N.Y.; (845) 758-7900, fishercenter.bard.edu; $25.

How will she follow this up? By tackling Gehry buildings around the world, of course.

Price Tower

by Frank Lloyd Wright in Bartlesville, Oklahoma!

“Flowers on the prarie where the June bugs zoom,
Plen’y of air and plen’y of room,
Plen’y of room to swing a rope!
Plen’y of heart and plen’y of hope.”

If you think of Wright hugging the prairie, then this building is, as they say about dance

the vertical expression of a horizontal idea.

Exhibition on Price Tower opening soon at the Chicago Architecture Foundation.

it will includ photographs, parts of the highly designed building, and orginal desks, chairs, tables and textiles, all designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.

And get this, in the exhibition the platforms on which Frank Lloyd Wright’s furniture will stand has been designed by Zaha Hadid and Office of Zaha Hadid, London.

Also in the show are drawings by Zaha Hadid for an addition to the Price Tower Arts Center.

That project seems to have been back-burnered a bit. The Price Tower Arts Center website doesn’t make a big deal of it, I wasn’t able to find the drawings on the website, and they have not yet started their capital campaign to build the addition. Plus they have no firm start date for it. But they say they do plan to build

Zaha’s folly.

By the way, even if you admire Zaha’s work, and who doesn’t, her homepage is over the top too much a trip.

“The desperate state of dance in America.”

Reading Terry this morning:

Ballet? Never Heard of It.
The decline and near-disappearance of dance in America.

… “Just a quarter-century ago, ballet and modern dance were vital, exciting, and (above all) popular. Now they’re at a frighteningly low ebb. What happened—and what can be done to pump up the volume?” …

I leapt to my feet (that’s not me above) and thought, “not in Chicago!”
Dance here is more glorious than I can ever remember.

Yesterday’s Trib agrees.
